But once I could look back on it in a calmer frame of mind, it struck me that his motive was surely not so simple and straightforward. Had it resulted from a fatal collision between reality and ideals? Perhaps–but this was still not quite it. Eventually, I began to wonder whether it was not the same unbearable loneliness that I now felt that had brought K to his decision. Anonymous
About This Quote

As a young person, Charles Bukowski is in a relationship with a woman named Lana. At the time, he has been molested several times by his stepfather. This leads to K being away from Lana, and when he returns to her she does not want anything to do with him. In the end, K is the one who breaks off the relationship.

In his poem, K reflects on what happened and realizes that though he was not physically or mentally abused by his new lover, he was still never alone because she did not want him. He felt lonelier than ever and eventually had no choice but to break up with her and move on.
